Facebook’s CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg fiercely denied his company played a role in getting Donald Trump elected president.

Speaking at a California tech conference on Thursday, Zuckerberg said, “The idea that fake news on Facebook influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea,” he said. “Voters make decisions
based on their lived experience.”

He pointed out Trump had more Facebook followers than Hillary Clinton and that some of his posts may have gotten more engagement.

Facebook’s News Feed algorithm has faced criticism for siloing what people see confirming users’ own views instead of showing content that might challenge their perspective.

Its Trending Stories section also sparked outcry when the company was accused of promoting more liberal stories. Facebook proceeded to fire much of its human curating team in favor of an algorithm-
driven approach.

Soon after, a series of fake stories started trending and showing up in users’ news feeds.

Zuckerberg acknowledged the News Feed function still needs work.

“My goal, and what I care about, is giving people the power to share so we can make the world more open and connected. That requires building a good version of News Feed. We still have work to do on
that. We’re going to keep improving it,” he told the conference.
