Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gained a small lead over Donald Trump in a recent national poll.
The poll, which sampled 1,561 respondents in nine states over
landlines and cell phones, brought Clinton back up to previous numbers.
Qunnipiac found
Clinton held the lead over Trump, with 40 percent support to his 38
percent, when respondents were asked to make a choice if there was a
generic third party candidate in the race.
Surprisingly, Democratic nominee Sen. Bernie Saunders polled much
better against the conservative firebrand, earning a healthy 48 percent
to Trump’s percent 39 percent. Sanders still can’t gain the support of
the Democratic Party, earning only 39 percent of support with Democratic
respondents.
“This is a tight race that will divide democrats and republicans, the
young and old,… in the months ahead,” according to Tim Malloy,
assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.
In this poll, 57 percent of respondents state Clinton was some degree
of unfavorable compared to Trump’s slightly higher 59 percent. 47
percent of respondents stated they would rather have a backyard BBQ with
Trump than the other candidates.
This slight lead for Clinton could indicate a growing support among
conservatives, especially since only 678 respondents identified
themselves as Democrats. Clinton, despite this handicap, national
scandals and a high disapproval rate, still managed to gain a lead over
Trump.
