Syrian state media has said the army has shot down an Israeli warplane and a drone after an Israeli attack on Syrian military position in Quneitra, near the Israeli border.

Just minutes after the Syrian claim on Tuesday, Israel denied it had lost any aircraft.

SANA news agency said the alleged intrusion was part of its support to groups fighting President Bashar al-Assad's troops.

"This blatant aggression comes as part of Israel's support for terrorist groups and its attempt to raise their crushed morals after their miserable failure and huge losses in the suburbs of Quneitra," SANA
said on Tuesday.

Syrian state media regularly refers to opposition groups as "terrorists".

Rejecting the Syrian claim, the Israeli military said two missiles were fired in the direction of its aircraft but both missed their targets.

On Monday, the Israeli military said it had targeted artillery positions of the Syrian government in the Syrian Golan Heights in response to what it called a projectile launched from Syria into northern Israel.
