Brazil TV star Domingos Montagner drowns in river during filming
A much-loved Brazilian soap star has drowned in a river where he filmed scenes for his show.

The body of 54-year-old Domingos Montagner was recovered from the Sao Francisco River in Brazil's north-east state of Sergipe, a river featured in the soap opera for which he was famous.

Mr Montagner starred in the popular Brazilian soap opera Velho Chico, playing a frequently embattled farmer.

In one episode his character is shot and left for dead in the Sao Francisco River, only to later be rescued by Indians.

Filming was taking place in the area, Globo TV, which produces the series, said.

Mr Montagner had gone swimming with actress Camila Pitanga, but was carried away by the strong current, the actress told police.

Ms Pitanga was also caught in the current, but managed to swim to a rock and twice tried to grab Mr Montagner's hand.

After hours of searching, rescue teams found Mr Montagner's body trapped between two rocks further downstream.

Jose Aparecido Cardoso, director of the state Legal Medical Institute, confirmed that the actor had drowned.
