Nigerian Governors Forum Seek $3.25bn from World Bank

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) has resolved to approach the World Bank to access $3.25bn belonging to the states to enable them pay workers’ salaries.

The decision was taken late Wednesday at a meeting with the bank’s country director, Rachid Benmessaoud.

The chairman of the forum, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, told newsmen after the meeting that Benmessaoud briefed the forum on the fund “lying down in the World Bank which largely belongs to state governments but has not been accessed.”

He said because of the cumbersome procedure in accessing the funds, most of the governors did not know that they had such funds in the World Bank.

He said through the initiative of the Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, the World Bank officials were invited to educate members of the forum on the funds.

Also speaking, El-Rufai said $3.25 bn out of the $4.25bn World Bank grant for the states in 2016 was lying undisbursed.

This, according to him, meant that the states were either not meeting their conditions or not moving fast enough to draw the $3.25bn.
