Donald Trump was only joking when the GOP nominee said he’d throw rival Hillary Clinton in jail if he wins the White House, his campaign said Monday.
Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway walked back Trump’s banana-republic threat, telling MSNBC on Monday: “That was a quip.”
“Whether she goes to jail is not up to Donald Trump,” she said on “Morning Joe.” “It’s up to whoever adjudicates whatever crime she has or has not committed.”
But during their debate in St. Louis on Sunday , Trump seemed to be clear that he intends to seek Clinton’s prosecution should he win.
“If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation because there has never been so many lies, so much deception,” Trump said.
Clinton shot back that it’s “awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country.” Trump responded: “Because you’d be in jail.”
