Hurricane Matthew killed at least 25 people on its destructive path through Hispaniola, the Caribbean island that Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic, according to Reuters, but the authorities are just beginning efforts to assess the full scale of the damage.

Streets in the city of Les Cayes, on Haiti’s southwest coast, were underwater. Most houses in the city were left roofless, and many were entirely uninhabitable, like the one below.

Experts have suggested that the delay could be anywhere from two to three weeks, enough time to restore the highway and communications to the south of the country.

In Petit Goave, Haiti, a crucial bridge across La Digue River that connects the southwestern peninsula to the capital, Port-au-Prince, collapsed, forcing residents, like those below, to try to ford the river on foot.

“Everybody was affected; there is nowhere to go,” Selio Dorval, a resident of Les Cayes, told Reuters, as he tried to repair the roof of his home. “I’m in the street now; my house is destroyed; I have kids; I have no house.”
