Hillary Clinton is considered to have “won” the first US presidential debate over Republican rival Donald Trump, with viewers believing she was more authentic and demonstrated better leadership qualities.
Clinton expressed her views more clearly and had a better understanding of key issues, according to viewers who watched the debate.
More than 60 per cent of viewers in the small CNN/ORC poll said Clinton gave the best performance. Just 27 per cent thought Trump performed better while six per cent of viewers believed they did an equally good job.
When asked whether each candidate would be able to handle the job of president if elected, 67 per cent said Clinton would but only 43 per cent said the same for Trump.
Reasons why Hillary Clinton is considered to have ‘won’
She spoke in detail about her policy proposals.
She swatted up and had various lines of attack, criticising Trump for his approach to gun violence, climate change, Isis and attitude towards women.
She mentioned the controversial remarks Trump had made about women: “This is a man who has called women pigs, slobs and dogs.”
Clinton said Trump’s questioning of incumbent President Barack Obama’s citizenship amounted to engaging in “racist behaviour”.
Her demeanour was calm and measured, unlike Trump who interrupted her numerous times.
Some commentators have said Trump’s energy wavered in the latter part of the debate, and at times he appeared to lose focus and concentration.
Nearly a third of viewers in the poll of 521 adults said the debate in New York meant they were more likely to vote for Clinton, while just under 20 per cent were more likely to mark Trump on their ballot paper.
Around half said it had not affected their vote.
Just over half of viewers believed Trump’s criticism of Clinton was “fair” – at one point he said “she doesn’t have the look, she doesn’t have the stamina” to be president – but nearly 70 per cent of viewers thought the same of Clinton’s criticism of Trump.
