A four-year-old boy has died in a fire in Wales. The youngster was among several occupants of the house in Alltwen, nnear Pontardawe, when the blaze broke out at 1.40am on Wednesday.
It is understood the boy’s mother and two siblings survived the fire, which broke out early on Wednesday at a terraced home in the village of Alltwen, near Pontardawe in the Swansea Valley.

The mother and a sibling are thought to have escaped and raised the alarm. Firefighters managed to save another sibling from the home but the four-year-old boy died.

Chris Margetts, of Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service, said: “The thoughts of the fire service are with the family and the community of Alltwen at this time. It is a very close community, and specialist teams from the fire and rescue service will be working with the community in the coming days.

“We would also like to remind people of the importance of having smoke alarms installed in their homes, and to check that they are working”.

A spokesman for South Wales police said: “Police and fire officers in Neath are investigating a house fire which was reported at around 1.40am. Several occupants of the property were taken to hospital. Sadly a four-year-old boy died at the scene.

“South Wales police and the fire service are conducting a joint investigation into the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to contact the police.”

South Wales Police said the cause of the fire was still under investigation. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene.
