US Furious as China unsafely intercepts one of its military jets

China has scrambled fighter jets to intercept US spy planes over the East China Sea, sending tensions between the world superpowers into overdrive.

Furious US defence officials branded the move “unsafe” as the US Air Force RC-135 was on a routine patrol yesterday. A Pacific Command statement said: “One of the intercepting Chinese jets had an unsafe excessive rate of closure on the RC-135 aircraft.

US Secretrary of State John Kerry described China's act as provocative and destabilizing.

“Initial assessment is that this seems to be a case of improper airmanship, as no other provocative or unsafe manoeuvres occurred.”

The statement added: “The Department of Defence is addressing the issue with China in appropriate diplomatic and military channels.”
