Isis killing more of its own fighters on the rise

Isis militants in Iraq and Syria are killing more of their own soldiers than ever before, reports suggest.
In the last three months, there have been a significant rise in the number of jihadis being slaughtered by their own leaders as Islamic State loses territory, according to a US official.

“We seem to have entered a phase where there is an internal struggle underway,” said Colonel Chris Garver, a spokesman for the US-led coalition Operation Inherent Resolve.

“We are seeing cases of senior Daesh leaders executing more junior Daesh leaders,” he added.

“We know they are under increasing pressure militarily – they are losing territory, they are losing finances, they are losing fighters and they are losing battles.

Figures from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights show 464 jihadis have been killed by Isis over the past two years, for reasons including desertion, fleeing the front line and internal conflict.

Isis has lost roughly 45 per cent of the territory it once held in Iraq and around 10 per cent in Syria. More than 25,000 of the group’s fighters have now been killed, according to the US government.
